Iran talking to Taliban on Afghanistan

NEW DELHI: Iran is talking with Taliban on Afghanistan’s security situation with the knowledge of the Afghan government according to a senior Iranian official reported by IRNA news agency .

The news comes only a week after the meeting of U.S. and Taliban officials.

Talks between Iran and the Taliban were held “to help curb the security problems in Afghanistan,” Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was quoted by IRNA as saying.

“All contacts and talks with the Taliban group have been with the knowledge of Afghanistan’s government and this process will continue,” he added.

Iran has historically supported Shia minorities in Afghanistan who fought against Taliban.

But more recently, Iran has been accused of funding Taliban to gain a foothold in Afghanistan and undermine US efforts in the country.

It may also be trying to get assurances from Taliban especially when it comes to regional trade through Charbahar, Iran’s port for Central Asia and Afghanistan.
